PREFACE

The eighth International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants was held from August 24–28, 1992 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The symposium was organised by a local organizing committee, and held under the auspices of the International Working Group on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants and the International Society for Horticultural Sciences. This Symposium was the latest of a series, previous symposia having been held in Littlehampton, England (1964), Copenhagen, Denmark (1968), Maryland, U.S.A. (1972), Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands (1976), Bad Harzburg, Germany (1980), Ithaca, U.S.A. (1984) and San Remo, Italy (1988).

The Symposium was attended by 64 participants from 16 countries, and 46 papers were presented. The major topics included: tomato spotted wilt virus, methods for detection and identification of viruses, improvement of health standards and viruses infecting commercially-important ornamental crops (especially pelargonium, orchids, flower-bulbs and a range of other species).

A.F.L.M. Derks was elected new chairperson, A. van Zaayen new secretary and J. Hammond new vice-chairperson of the ISHS Working Group on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants.

It was proposed that the 9th International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants will be organized in 1996 in Israel.
