USE OF USER GENERATED CONTENT IN WAR JOURNALISM AND ETHICAL ISSUES

ABSTRACT
Recently, since there have been many wars and conflicts around the world, war journalism has emerged as an area of specialized journalism that attracts attention and interest. This study aims to identify the relationships between professional journalists and citizen/participant journalists during the news gathering and writing processes, and the ethical problems that arise in the use of user-generated content by professionals. In line with the stated, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 professional journalists working on national news television channels in Turkey and following the Russia-Ukraine war. While preparing the interview questions, the ethical principles that Lisette Johnston and Kevin Williams put forward in their studies on war journalism were decisive. The findings were evaluated in line with the aforementioned principles. According to the results of the research, which was prepared based on the hypothesis that "the use of user-generated content in war journalism would violate the ethical principles of journalism", the content produced by people who were in war and conflict zones in the Russia-Ukraine war was mostly used by broadcasting organizations. However, it has been determined that the use of such content by the news media in the production of war news causes ethical problems in subjects such as objectivity, impartiality, censorship, fake news and journalist safety. Professional journalists interviewed state that they are aware of the risks that may arise from the use of such content in war journalism, and emphasize the necessity of a properly functioning verification mechanism as a priority.

ÖZ
Son dönemlerde, Dünya genelinde birçok savaş ve çatışma söz konusu olduğundan savaş haberciliği, ilgi ve dikkat çeken bir uzman gazetecilik alanı olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışma, savaş dönemlerinde profesyonel gazeteciler ile yurttaş/katılımcı gazetecilerin haber toplama ve yazma sürecinde kurdukları ilişkileri ve kullanıcı türevli içeriğin profesyoneller tarafından kullanımında ortaya çıkan etik sorunları tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Belirtilenler doğrultusunda, Türkiye’de ulusal yayın yapan haber televizyon kanallarında görevli olup Rusya-Ukrayna savaşını takip eden 6 profesyonel gazeteciyle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşme soruları hazırlanırken Lisette Johnston ve Kevin Williams’ın savaş gazeteciliği üzerine yaptıkları çalışmalarında ortaya koydukları etik ilkeler belirleyici olmuştur. Elde edilen bulgular söz konusu ilkeler doğrultusunda değerlendirilmiştir. “Savaş haberciliğinde kullanıcı türevli içeriğin kullanılmasının gazeteciliğin etik ilkelerini ihlal edeceği” hipotezinden yola çıkılarak hazırlanan araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, Rusya-Ukrayna savaşında savaş ve çatışma bölgelerinde bulunan kişilerin ürettikleri içerikler, yayın kuruluşları tarafından çoğunlukla kullanılmıştır. Ancak bu tip içeriklerin haber medyası tarafından savaş haberlerinin üretiminde kullanılmasıyla nesnellik, tarafsızlık, sansür, yalan haber ve gazeteci güvenliği gibi konularda etik sorunlara neden olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Görüşülen profesyonel gazeteciler, bu tip içeriklerin savaş haberciliğinde kullanımıyla ortaya çıkabilecek risklerin farkında olduklarını belirtmekte ve öncelikli olarak sağlıklı bir şekilde işleyen teyit mekanizmasının gerekliliğine vurgu yapmaktadırlar.
