Scholars in Private: On the Correspondence of Goldziher and Vámbéry
Kinga Dévényi (Budapest)
Abstract
The article analyses the correspondence between Ármin Vámbéry (1832-1913) and his preeminent student, Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921), one of the founders of Islamic studies in Europe. Good documentation of their relationship is provided by Vámbéry’s letters held in the Oriental Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and – in lack of Goldziher’s replies –
Goldziher’s entries in his Tagebuch, as well as his Memorial speech written on the occasion of Vámbéry’s death.
