The structure of the tailings dump in the technological chain of a mining enterprise is functionally designed for storage of ore processing waste and clarification of technical water in the recycling water supply system of the mineral processing plant. In most cases, a tailings dump is an aggradation facility, the capacity of which is provided by the protective structures called tailings dams.
The author analyses functional features of construction and operation of tailings in a technological chain of the mining enterprise. The tailings dam construction is subdivided according to the method of the lift construction: upstream, central line and downstream structures.
The article considers typical geometric dimensions of both the dam and the upstream and downstream slope ratios. The tailings construction is carried out by discharging the processed ore slurry from the dressing plant into the tailings pond by distributive mode. The tailings dam is raised by a lifted embankment on the liquid sediments. The above features were taken as basic for creation of the 3D hydro-geomechanical model.
The study given was aimed at developing the methodical approaches to creation of a 3D hydro-geomechanical model of a tailings dam. The study results include the model creation, a computational scheme and specified boundary conditions and loads. The obtained calculation data were verified by comparing with the data of in-situ measurements, which confirmed the validity of the developed 3D hydro-geomechanical model. Comprehensive analysis of modeling results was aimed at revealing general regularities of changes in parameters of hydro-geomechanical state of the tailings dam during its construction. Soil displacement analysis, which reflects the state of the dam under study as a whole, was taken as the basis. Quantitative values of displacements were determined for modelled geometric dimensions and investigated conditions during the lifted construction of the tailings dam.
