Substances of petroleum origin that reach groundwater limit water use and can have irreversible effects on ecosystems interacting with them. Quantitative changes in groundwater and synergistic effects generated by petroleum products on ecosystems can be objectively quantified based on a scenario for the transport of pollutants concentrations through the aquifer.
In this sense, with the help of mathematical models, the research estimates the spatial and temporal dimension of a possible accidental pollution by petroleum products resulting from a fuel distribution station. The MODFLOW hydrogeological model was used to simulate the flow of groundwater through the aquifer and to investigate the parameters of petroleum products? transport in the saturated area. Following the research, a dependence between physical-chemical properties of pollutants and geo-mechanical characteristics of the mineral matrix was found, as well as a significant increase in the concentration of petroleum products following the inclination of lithological layers. The model of petroleum products evolution in aquifers provides us with important data for choosing the best techniques to improve water quality and establishing optimal measures to reduce the saturated area?s degree of pollution. The research conducted can provide data to specialists or researchers who are directly interested in the study of groundwater and want to deepen the use of mathematical models of pollutant transport. |
