Balcony as an Architectural Item

As an architectural item that has not been seen as a mandatory part of the building throughout history, the balcony was designed as protrusions made in line with demand and need. Even if the balconies that evolve from the bay window in traditional housings are open, semi-closed, recessed, or closed with glass afterward, for those who do not live in a house with a garden, they have become an intermediate space between indoor and outdoor, where outdoor needs and functions are met. Functionally designed balconies have become a building component in time to make the building look aesthetically pleasing, and today it has become an item with semantic values. This study aims to make an inference over the semantic values assumed during the pandemic process that started with the Covid-19 epidemic, which has affected the whole world since the first month of 2020 and the emergence of the balcony in architecture functional, and aesthetic uses. In this direction, the relationship of the balcony with architecture in its historical process has been scrutinized, then, the use of balconies in architecture is explained with examples under the titles of functional, aesthetic, and pandemic. In the conclusion evaluation of the study, with which actions its functional properties are provided, the effects of its use for aesthetic purposes on architecture and its semantic value during the pandemic period were discussed.
