Abstract:
This report deals with some exploratory excavations carried out under the auspices of the Battle and District Historical Society in 1959 and 1960 in an area where, as far as can be ascertained, no previous discoveries of Romano-British remains have been recorded. The building remains found were unimportant; but associated with them in a small space were many objects, dating mostly from the middle of the 1st century to about the middle of the 3rd century, which are not easily matched elsewhere. They have been housed in the museum of the B. and D.H.S at Langton House, Battle. This report also includes the evidence obtained that no estuary could have existed at Bodiam at the time of occupation of the site, as in later times; and also fresh evidence on the course of the Roman road. The fact that such a small area yielded so much gives promise of rich reward if this part of the Rother Valley, particularly the other sites indicated, could be thoroughly examined at a later date. Although there have been preliminary reports, the publication of details has been delayed until now by the closure for two years of the B. and D.H.S. museum, and by many other unforseen circumstances.
