Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Glendoran, Whitecliff, Coleford, Gloucestershire (NGR: SO 5687 1016) during water mains rehabilitation works. It was undertaken on behalf of Severn Trent Water. The watching brief was required for a c.250m stretch of open-cut pipeline in the vicinity of Whitecliff Furnace, an important industrial archaeological site dating from the late 18th century and a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM470). The project aimed to determine if any significant archaeological remains were present and, if so, to indicate their location, date and nature. The watching brief demonstrated the existence of a large amount of re-deposited waste material from the blast furnace which had been spread out to the east of the monument and along the course of the adjacent road (Newland Street). The material may have been dumped to create a solid yard and trackway to service the furnace. A sandstone surface was also discovered but its purpose remains unclear. In addition, a stone-built culvert, probably also of 18th century date, was recorded in a test pit located beyond the formal limits of the watching brief. No evidence of activity pre-dating the furnace was discovered.
