Abstract: |
This report assesses the archaeological and historical significance of two unsurfaced green lanes called Rosses Lane and Guises Lane in Wichenford, Worcestershire. The report brings together a wide range of archaeological, historical and cartographic evidence relating directly and indirectly to the lanes, and uses this information and nationally recognised criteria to make considered assessments in each case. In summary, Rosses Lane is considered to be a locally significant archaeological monument and historic landscape feature. It is almost certainly the oldest surviving trackway in the locality, being of late Anglo-Saxon or earlier origin. It itself, it contains a range of visible features representing 19th or 20th century maintenance and use, principally ditches and managed hedgerows and hedgerow trees. As an archaeological monument, the lane is in reasonable condition, has a reasonably high amenity value, and is not vulnerable to current types and levels of use. Guises Lane is also considered to be a locally significant archaeological monument and historic landscape feature, being a trackway created in the medieval or early modern period. Although it is probably not as early as Rosses Lane, it contains a wider range of visible features reflecting its past maintenance and use, including hedgebanks and two ponds. However, the lane is in poorer condition, being very overgrown, and almost impassable in places, a factor that has reduced its amenity value but also the potential for damage. |
