Abstract: |
Between the 17th and 21st of June 2013 Oxford Archaeology East carried out an Archaeological Evaluation on Land at East View Close, Radwinter, Essex, centred on NGR TL 60853 37506. A total of 8 trenches were excavated across two separate fields within the proposed development area that revealed archaeological remains throughout the site. The earliest remains comprised a background scatter of worked flint dating to the Late Mesolithic, Early Neolithic and Early Bronze Age periods, and a ditch that may represent the remnant of a Bronze Age field system. Evidence for Late Iron Age activity was also recorded in the southern part of the development site, however trenching was extremely limited within this part of the development area due to thick undergrowth. In the northern part of the development area extensive evidence for Early Roman settlement was recorded, possibly relating to the site of a putative small Roman town located at Radwinter. |
