Abstract: |
A brick terraced town house (statutorily listed grade II*) was recorded before and during refurbishment. The house is documented as having been built c 1717-18, on the site of part of the Great Garden of Chelsea New Manor House, laid out c 1540, traces of which were recorded in a trial pit. The house, of brick, comprising four storeys and basement, with a rear closet wing rising two storeys, was set back from the street, with a larger garden to the rear. Original panel partitions, door cases and ceiling cornices, and the principal staircase from ground to 1st floor only, survived. Originally a service staircase went from cellar to 3rd floor. Very long tenancies had reduced the chances of alterations. In 1883-93 one occupant, Lord Courtney, a Liberal politician, removed the service stairs between the ground and 1st floors, rearranged them elsewhere, installed a food hoist and added a rear wing on two storeys and in the basement. Later, Lady Ormond (née Violet Sargent) extended the closet wing and rearranged 1st-floor rooms, perhaps to better hang her late brother's (John Singer Sargent's) paintings. |
