Abstract

This study is based on the data of the Red River's annual discharge and sediment transport between 1960 and 2010, documented at the Hanoi gauging station. The results showed that on a regular basis the annual discharge and sediment transport varied from 2665m3/s to 5058m3/s and 12×106 t/yr to 201×106 t/yr, respectively. Although the sediment transport is strongly related to the hydrological conditions, it has significantly decreased since the reservoirs came into operation. Specifically, since 1989 (the year of Hoa Binh reservoir in operation), the sediment transport decreased from 120×106 t/yr to 58×106 t/yr and since Tuyen Quang and Dai Thi reservoirs were in operation (2007), the transport volume was down to 19.7×106 t/yr. This indicates a strong impact of the reservoirs on the natural sediment formation of the Red River, causing erosion in the coastal area and ecological imbalance on the Red River delta.
