Concerning the Catastrophic Disaster in East Japan on March 11, 2011, maladjustment problems in general were discussed. First, the definition of adjustment was reviewed in terms of: 1) Darwin's theory of natural selection which conquers the struggle for survival; 2) differences of adaptation and adjustment; and 3) Hartmann's ego psychology, which deals with the autonomic adjustment functioning of the ego. Second, maladjustment was discussed in terms of: 1) the definition of maladjustment; 2) the maladjustment seen in the questionnaires which estimates "feelings of maladjustment" by CMI, and "social activity disorders" by GHQ; 3) differences of maladjustment behavior and problem behavior which were illustrated by three virtual victims of the catastrophic disaster; 4) the definition of "adjustment disorders" by DSM-IV-R; and 5) "Bereavement" is differentiated from "major depressive episode" according to certain symptoms. And third, disaster reactions were discussed in terms of: 1) the classification of disasters, natural or man-made; and 2) emotional reactions to the disaster, immediately or soon after the onset of the disaster, and "stress-related disorders" such as adjustment disorders, acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The so-called "survivor syndrome" was also introduced.
