We experienced three cases of early-stage deep infection after arthroplasty over the last five years. One case developed complications after total knee arthroplasty; the others after femoral head replacement.
In all three cases, curettage of the focus and closed continuous irrigation were conducted without removal of the implants as soon as infection was diagnosed. None of the cases have shown recurrence to the present.
Our experience suggests that early detection of infection and early operation with closed continuous irrigation are very important, and every effort should be made to prevent recurrence without removal of implants when dealing with eary-stage deep infection.
