Ootuki Setuzô, the son-in-law of Ootuki Bankei, the head master of Yokena School, Sendai Clan, translated the authentic report of Com. Perry's “Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to China Seas and Japan, performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry, United States Navy, by order of the Government of the United States.”, 1856, which was presented to his Clan Lord Date Yosikuni in 1862.
Though not the first, this was one of the most voluminous translataions from English that Japan ever had. These hand written manuscripts translations with the original ‘Perry's’ now belongs to Miyagi-Ken Library, Sendai City. Later Ootuki Setuzo promoted to lieutenant general in Japanese army, and translated four English and American law books.
After Meidi Restoration in 1874 Japanese Government established an English school at Sendai from which Saito Hidesaburo, one of the greatest English. lexicographers (grammar and dictionaries) in Japan graduated. Being that E.school abolished in 1878, the teaching of English studies in Sendai was handed to Sendai high school, Tokagakko, Tohoku Gakuin College, and the Governmental 2nd High School respectively.
During those days we must admit that we owe mucia of our English studies to many English and Americau teachers and missionaries who came to Sendai in the early eays of Meidi. A brief sketch of those schools and English teachers is given in this short report.
