Awareness, Anthropology and Climate Change

Abstract

Dieser Sammelband ist das Ergebnis des Lehrforschungsprojekts "Awareness, Anthropology and Climate Change" des Bachelorstudiengangs Sozialwissenschaften, das in internationalem Austausch Forschungsprojekte zum Thema Klimawandel und Klimagerechtigkeit durchgeführt hat. Die Lehrveranstaltung setzte auf die Synergie von Ethnologie und ästhetischer Forschung und vermittelte die Fähigkeit, anthropologische und ästhetische Perspektiven in der Forschung zu verbinden. In Zusammenarbeit mit "Discover New York" von Prof. Heidi Upton und ihren Studenten an der St. John's University werden verschiedene Forschungsmethoden erforscht, um achtsame Forschungsperspektiven zu entwickeln und Einblicke in Reflexionen über Klimagerechtigkeit sowohl in Göttingen als auch in New York zu vertiefen. Nach einer ersten Phase der Zusammenarbeit mit den New Yorker Studierenden und Prof. Heidi Upton verlagerte sich der Schwerpunkt auf die eigenständige Forschung in Göttingen. Mit ethnographischen Methoden wie Interviews und teilnehmender Beobachtung wurden in kleinen Forschungsgruppen verschiedene Facetten von Klimawandel und Klimagerechtigkeit empirisch untersucht. Die kontinuierliche Entwicklung und Verfeinerung der Fragestellungen war der Antrieb für dynamische Seminardiskussionen. Der Sammelband präsentiert die Ergebnisse der Arbeit von fünf Studierenden der Sozialwissenschaften und Ethnologie an der Universität Göttingen im Wintersemester 2022/2023, die in Forschungsgruppen zu selbst entwickelten Fragestellungen empirisch geforscht haben. Zu den wichtigsten Fragen, die in diesem Band behandelt werden, gehören die Wirksamkeit von Klimaschutzgesetzen auf lokaler Ebene, die Existenz und öffentliche Darstellung von Initiativen von Klimaaktivisten und deren Vorstellungen, die emotionalen Triebkräfte des Engagements und die Motivationen, die ein langfristiges Engagement von Aktivisten begründen.

This edited volume is the result of the course research project "Awareness, Anthropology and Climate Change" of the Bachelor of Social Sciences, which conducted research projects on the topic of climate change and climate justice in an international exchange. The course focused on the synergy of Anthropology and Aesthetic research and provided the skills to combine anthropological and aesthetic perspectives in research. In collaboration with "Discover New York" by Prof. Heidi Upton and her students at St. John's University, various research methods are being explored to develop mindful research perspectives and deepen insights into reflections on climate justice in both Göttingen and New York. After an initial phase of collaboration with the New York students and Prof. Heidi Upton, the focus shifted to independent research in Göttingen. Using ethnographic methods such as interviews and participant observation, small research groups empirically investigated various facets of climate change and climate justice. The continuous development and refinement of questions fueled dynamic seminar discussions. This edited volume presents the results of the work of five students of Social Sciences and Anthropology at the University of Göttingen in the winter semester 2022/2023, who conducted empirical research in research groups on questions they developed themselves. Key questions addressed in this volume include the effectiveness of climate change legislation at the local level, the existence and public representation of climate activist initiatives and their ideas, the emotional drivers of engagement, and the motivations that underpin long-term activist engagement.
