The creative aspects of product design must be incorporated into a procedure that ensures that client requirements and expectations are satisfied. Manufacturers develop design processes to enhance value to clients and to improve product quality and reliability. A typical design process involves clarification of clients’ requirements, identification of both constraints and the context in which the product will be used, and development of one or more design concepts for consideration by the client. The process of defining functions and specifications, detailed design, and analysis of production issues follows. A lecture series on the design process, will enable students to grasp the necessity for having a design procedure and will make them more effective both as designers and as decision makers. This paper presents the course content and gives examples of the teaching approach used.
