Abstract

We experienced an adult case of intussusception due to Burkitt's type lymphomas. A 22-year-old male was admitted to the hospital because of an abdominal pain. He was diagnosed as having an ileo-colon type intussusception by selective contrast radiography of the intestine, barium enema, ultrasonography and computed tomography. Ileocecal resection including the intussusception was carried out. Histopathologically it was malignant lymphoma of Burkitt's type. The level of serum EBV-VCA IgG was 40 times as high as the normal level. Postoperative chemotherapy was added, but the patient died at 53rd days after the operation.
Sixteen cases of intussusception due to Burkitt's type malignant lymphoma have been reported in the Japanese literature. Although Burkitt's type malignant lymphomas are believed to have a poor prognosis, these cases of the disease with intussusception showed a better prognosis that only three out of 16 patients died.
