Abstract

We experienced a rare case of tubular type duplication of the sigmoid colon with communication between the ileum and sigmoid colon. A 33-year-old Chinease man was seen at the hospital because of an acute abdominal pain on Feb. 9, 1995. His abdominal pain disappeared about 15 minutes after his arrival. However, we determined to operate on him because of persistent radiological evidence of bowel obstruciton. At operation, the ileum was strangulated with fibrous structures, and the sigmoid colon was found to connect with the ileum. Partial resection of the small intestine and connected sigmoid colon was performed. Microscopically, the communicating tract consisted of colonic mucosa and smooth muscle.
We assume that a tubular type duplication of the sigmoid colon had penetrated to the ileum resulted from ulcer formation, we should entertain the duplication of the intestine as a probable diagnosis for acute abdomen showing non-specific clinical course or abdominal findings.
