This paper describes twp adult cases of intussusception which might be cause by an ileus tube. Case 1 was a 46-year-old woman. She developed ileus one year after operation for hysteromyoma and conservative therapy by inserting an ileus tube for one week. No remission, however, was noted and operation (freeing of adhesion) was carried out. The ileus tube was kept inserting for another 4 days after the operation. On the 7th hospital day the patient vomited. Abdominal ultrasonography indicated intussusception of the small intestine and it was repaired via Hutchinson's method. Case 2 was a 59-year-old man who developed ileus 2 years after total gastrectomy for hemorrhagic gastric ulcer. Conservative therapy by inserting an ileus tube was performed, followed by operation (freeing of the adhesion). Postoperatively the ileus tube was kept indwelling. On the 7th hospital day the patient developed generalized peritonitis and was operated on. During surgery intussusception was found in the terminal ileum and excision of the intestine was performed.
When ileus tube is used for the purpose of aspiration therapy or prevention of postoperative ileus, strict observation would be mandatory by entertaining a probable association of this disease. In this paper dosmetic clinical cases and review of the literature are presented.
