Abstract

Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in adults is a rare disease. This paper presents such a case along with some review of the literature. A 76-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of nausea and vomiting. Radiographycally, the pylorus of the patient showed string sign. Endoscopically, a stenosis at the pyloric ring was revealed. Conservative treatment was started, but it failed to provide any symptomatic remission. Operation was performed. At operation, muscular hypertrophy was recognized at the pyloric ring. And distal gastrectomy was performed. Pathologically, only the circular muscle was thickened, and there was no inflammatory cell at submucosa of the pyloric ring. No ulcer nor malignant findings were noted. This case was diagnosed as hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in the adult.
