Abstract	This study aimed to address a research gap concerning the influence of parental literacy background on their involvement in their children's basic education. The research was conducted in the lower Bagdogra gram Panchayat of Naxalbari block in Darjeeling district. Data was collected from 80 female respondents, comprising both literate and illiterate individuals. Both literate and illiterate parents expressed a positive attitude towards schooling and the importance of education in their children's lives. However, there were notable differences in their perspectives. Literate and illiterate parents generally believed in the fundamental importance of education for a child's mental development, but their opinions varied regarding its effectiveness in fostering all-round development. Both groups agreed on the significance of having an educational degree, with literate parents emphasizing its value in securing better job opportunities, while illiterate parents aspired to provide their children with better opportunities. Concerns were raised by both literate and illiterate parents about the education system's effectiveness in equipping students with practical life skills. The study found a consensus on the positive impact of education on a child's character, values, and overall development among both literate and illiterate parents. While there were variations in opinion, particularly regarding the role of schools in nurturing talents and practical life skills, both groups recognized the fundamental importance of education in shaping children's lives. The study highlighted the significance of education and parental engagement in children's lives, acknowledging the complexity of these beliefs and perceptions. These findings have important implications for educational policy and practice.
