Abstract: Case studies are usually used in order to activate pupils in economic education and to help them develop their abilities and skills necessary to analyse practical problems, based on the acquired knowledge in the particular school subject. Didactic theory typically considers this method as a motivational tool showing pupils how they can apply the knowledge learnt in the previous lessons in situations from economic practice. The article analyses to what extent a suitably formulated case study can help teachers to evaluate and assess pupils and their achievements. We point out that a case study can be even more appropriate to assess pupils with respect to most of the assessment criteria set by the relevant ministry regulation for secondary school pupils assessment in economic subjects than common types oral or written examinations.

Keywords: Case study; evaluation; assessment; economic subjects; secondary schools.
