A CRITICAL REVIEW OF HAMPSON'S EDITION

OF THE HEXAMETRICAL MARTYROLOGIUM BREVIATUM

IN BM COTTON GALBA A xvm

Three stages may be distinguished in the history of the description given to the hexametrical work the oldest form of which has been shown to be that in BM Vesp. VI.

1. D'Achery who first published this work from MS. R (St. Remi, lost) described it as Martyrologium Bedae (1);

2. Rejecting its ascription to Bede, Dom Quentin (2) still considered this work in the tradition of historical martyrologies, his first scholarly edition of it being based on a comparison of d'Achery's text with MSS

0 (Oxford Canonici) — Bodl. Misc. 560 (all tenth century), and S — BM Sloane 263 (eleventh century).

3. Rejecting its description as a martyrology, Dom Wilmart adopted Bishop's description of this work as a (or the) " (metrical) calendar of the church of York." Dom Wilmart however added the significant words (3) :

II est entendu que ce calendrier particulier n'est pas liturgique, en ce sens qu'il ne correspond pas, de point en point, à un cycle normal, réglé pour l'usage d'une église déterminée, et, plus précisément, qu'il omet trop de fêtes pour avoir pu rendre les services qu'on attend d'un calendrier.

Regarding the possible function of this work, Dom Wilmart suggested that it was

un répertoire versifié... une série mnémotechnique (offrant) des avantages aux maîtres et aux élèves. L'auteur, évidemment, a voulu former, et fixer dans les mémoires, un choix de fêtes, les plus solennelles, imposées et indiquées par la liturgie, et quelques autres, sur lesquelles son attention s'était portée pour diverses raisons,

such as personal devotion, influence of direct reading, literary traditions and local associations.
