ON THE TEXT OF THE BERNE FOLIE TRISTAN1

The Berne Folie Tristan has long taxed the ingenuity and resources of its editors 2. Ernest Hoepffner and his predecessors found themselves severely limited by the rather imperfect Berne ms. 354 (B), the only copy of the poem available to them 3 ; today, since the discovery of the Cambridge fragment (C), we dispose of a new resource. In their edition of the sixty-line text *, Ruth J. Dean and Elspeth Kennedy have resolved many dimculties and often pointed the way toward new editorial solutions ; it remains now to examine the two manuscripts together with a view to establishing an authoritative text for the passage.

There is much valuable insight to be gleaned from the C testimony. True, the Anglo-Norman dialect of C presents familiar problems of faulty elision and meter, compounded by idio-
