Introduction
Language teaching and learning is a discipline which can benefit from historical case studies as called for by Linn in this volume. The majority of modern linguistic theories and methods form part of a cycle of recurrent ideas, though this is rarely recognised. Yet, the recently published Handbook of Language Teaching (Long and Doughty 2009) does show encouraging signs of the discipline acknowledging that earlier manifestations of an idea are important to current research by including a chapter on its history. The introductory paragraph succinctly explains and justifies POPULAR LANGUAGE WORKS AND THE AUTONOMOUS LANGUAGE LEARNER IN 19TH CENTURY SCANDINAVIA
