Between the years 1830-1840, the genus name Macrotoma has been successively attri¬ buted by three authors in different animal orders (Diptera, Coleóptera and Collembola).

The oldest published name, Macrotoma Laporte, 1832 (Diptera) has not been considered as a valid name since 1882. It is currently a synonym of Longina Wiedemann, 1830, which belongs to the Neriidae family (Steyskal, 1968 ; Buck & Marshall, 2004). The first author who proposed the synonymy between Macrotoma Laporte, 1832, and Longina Wiedemann, 1830, was OSTEN SACKEN (1882) in his work on Diptera from Philippines Islands. CRESSON (1912) was sceptic about this synonymy but did not give any arguments to reject it and to support his opinion. After him, several eminent workers (Enderlein, 1922 ; Hennig, 1937 ; Aczel, 1950, 1961 ; Steyskal, 1968) have confirmed the synonymy introduced by Osten Sacken and have used the name Longina in their important contributions to the study of the Neriidae family. Very recently, the South American genus Longina has been revised by BUCK & Marshall (2004) who also confirm the synonymy between Macrotoma and Longina. Moreover, the description of Macrotoma Laporte was based on a single species, M. peleterii Laporte, 1832, from "Cochinchine" in the Oriental region. This locality was mislabelled (Enderlein, 1922) and the genus is in fact native from the Neotropical region.

The second oldest published name, Macrotoma Audinet-Serville, 1832 (Coleóptera) has long been recognized and used by workers in the Cerambycidae, and was the basis for the tribe Macrotomini Thomson, 1 860. Recently, Vives (2000) proposed replacing Macrotomini with Prinobiini (with type-genus Prinobius Mulsant, 1 842) because, as was stated, Macrotoma Laporte, 1832a, was published in April, 1832, whereas Macrotoma Audinet-Serville, 1832, was published in July, 1 832. This homonymy was already reported by Laporte himself
