Optimization of slice configuration of steel coils.

23 August 2023, Version 1

Abstract

Prior to the manufacturing of hermetic compressor lids, the industrial partner requires the production of quasi-circular pieces of steel, sliced from a coil. The coil consists in a wide plate of steel that is rolled for logistical reasons. On the other hand, these quasi-circular shapes are defined as regular circular disks, but allowing deformities under some restrictions, which gives margin for some optimisations. The slicing process of such pattern produces a considerable amount of scrap, that besides being recycled, causes cost for the partner. This work aims to find a slicing pattern for those coils in order to maximise the number of quasi-circles produced, consequently minimising the production of scrap. In addiction, the slicing pattern should also be compatible with the limitations of the machinery of the industrial partner and their safety policies for workers.
