Abstract

This report presents the results of investigation for cavitation pitting on the water-side of the liner in type DF 50 diesel locomotives and service test for corrosion prevention in their cooling systems.
The results of the examination are as follows;
(a) The pitting usually occurs within a band extending from the top to the bottom of the wetted surface of the liner on the “thrust” side of the cylinder. It has been observed that the pitting occurred under such cavitating conditions as influenced by corrosion.
(b) The depth of pitting for MAN type engine liner in inhibited coolant such as chromate or soluble oil is estimated to be 0.3-2.0mm/100, 000km running.
(c) It is noticeable that the Sulzer type engine liner was attacked by no pitting in the same inhibited coolants.
