Teaching staff of women’s gymnasiums in 1870—1917: numerical composition and financial situation (using the example of Perm province)

Abstract

The article considers the formation of teaching corps of women’s gymnasiums of the Ministry of Public Education on the territory of the Perm province. The analysis made it possible to determine the level of provision of Russian school education with personnel, the dynamics of the gender structure and the number of personnel in these institutions from 1870 to the beginning of the 20th century. It is noted that the development of women’s secondary schools depended on the number of high school teachers. The reasons for the shortage of own teachers in women’s schools (underfunding from the treasury, the scarcity of own funds) and ways out of it are shown. The gradual admission of women to the pedagogical service not only eliminated the shortage of personnel in secondary school, but also led to the predominance of women among the teaching staff of the region under consideration. Along with staffing issues in the context of reforming the system of secondary education in the early 20th century the issues of improving the qualifications of the teaching and educational staff of women’s gymnasiums, demanding from them a high educational qualification were resolved. The measures taken by the educational department contributed to raising the status of both the teaching staff and the women’s gymnasiums themselves.
