Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of scientific activity of the full member of the Orenburg Scientific Archival Commission Pyotr Stepanovich Nazarov (1868—?), who conducted anthropological, ethnographic and archaeological research on the territory of the Orenburg Province and the Turgay Region at the end of the 19th century. His personality has never been the object of special study. For the first time, biographical data available in the literature are summarized and critically analyzed, and previously unknown details of his biography are given. His anthropological and ethnographic works are characterized. Particular attention is paid to his archaeological work since it was in this area that he was lucky to unearth and explore an unrobbed burial with unique inventory belonging to the era of the early nomads — “mound in the Bish-Uba area” (actually being Mound 1 of the Sara burial ground). For a long time in Russian Historiography, the name of P. S. Nazarov raised a lot of confusion as he was confused with other Nazarovs. The article made efforts to clear up the misunderstanding.
