Charitable activities of Tatar entrepreneurs in the Steppe region (late 19th — early 20th century)

Abstract
The article is aimed at studying the charitable and patronage activities of Tatar entrepreneurs in the Kazakh steppes. The paper uses a problem-chronological approach, which made it possible to identify the factors that influenced the charitable activities of merchants and entrepreneurs in the dynamics of modernization changes in Tatar society at the end of the nineteenth century. The study shows a new perspective to the motivations of charitable activity of Tatar entrepreneurs. The study revealed that Tatar charitable societies were a veiled form of sponsorship of new-fangled madrassas. The Tatars, being a mobilized diaspora in the Kazakh steppes, were able to resist the policy of Russification and Christianization by their own educational institutions sponsored by the Tatar bourgeoisie. The Russian authorities saw in the new-fangled madrassas the desire of the Turkic peoples to isolate themselves and tried to prevent the establishment of Tatar and Kazakh charities.
