“…THE PARTY DESERTS ME”: REFLECTIONS OF AN ORDINARY COMMUNIST (BASED ON THE MATERIALS OF L. N. BOLSHAKOV’S DIARY IN THE LATE 1980s — EARLY 1990s)
Abstract
The article systematizes and analyzes the diary entries of an honorary citizen of the city of Orenburg, a scientist and public figure, a member of the CPSU since 1944, L. N. Bolshakov, concerning his attitude to the Communist Party at the turn of the 1980—1990s. The evolution of the Bolshakov’s views on this issue is shown. It consists, firstly, in the separation of the concepts of “communism” and “Communist Party”; secondly, in enhancing the criticality of thinking in relation to party leaders; thirdly, in the formation of a negative attitude towards party work in general, thus in disappointment in the party mechanisms of work in general. All three lines of evolution, in our opinion, were typical of a simple Soviet intelligent person, which was one of the important factors of the powerlessness of civil society in the emerging “New Russia” of the 1990s.
