A knowledge of the learning styles and educational needs common to students in East Asia is needed to design appropriate e-learning systems for them. As a first step toward acquiring such knowledge, a questionnaire was given to science and engineering students in China, and the results were analyzed to determine their common needs. The most important factors related to the design of e-Learning systems for science and engineering students in China were found to be (1) self-assurance and self-reliance, (2) a desire for a teacher's guidance, and (3) structured learning.
