Deterioration mechanisms of materials – Influences on performance and reliability

Schädigungsmechanismen von Werkstoffen – Einflüsse auf Funktion und Zuverlässigkeit
  • Horst Czichos
From the journal Materials Testing

Abstract

This paper considers the mechanisms which can detrimentally affect the performance and reliability of materials in their technical applications. The basic deterioration mechanisms – electromigration, aging, biodeterioration, corrosion, wear, fracture – are reviewed and the methods of structural health monitoring and performance control are outlined.
