Abstract

On the basis of all available data on precipitation and runoff in the Hindu Kush area and its neighbouring mountains, an attempt is made to estimate the water budget of individual catchment areas. It is shown that the precipitation recording stations, which all lie in the valleys and basins, cannot be in any way taken as representative of the higher areas. These receive precipitation amounts of 100-200 cm or more in winter and spring. The boundary of the influence of the summer monsoon rain from the south is given by the percentage share of summer precipitation; towards north and east we are dealing with convective precipitation not directly connected with the monsoon. As an addition to our know ledge some further climatic data from as yet unpublished station series are presented.
