Abstract: Gamification research in education has produced mixed results on student affective and behavioral outcomes. This meta-analysis provides findings that integrated the empirical, quantitative research on gamification in formal educational settings by examining the overall effect size and the effect sizes of each gamification design elements respectively. The final corpus included 19 independent studies for affective outcomes with a total of N = 1974 participants, and 13 independent studies for behavioral outcomes with N = 1596 participants. The overall effect size for affective outcomes is at g = 0.574 [0.384, 0.764] and g = 0.740 [0.465, 1.014] for behavioral outcomes. We provide results on affective outcome and behavioral outcomes respectively and discuss our findings and recommendations for future research and practice.
