This essay examines Lorine Niedecker's poems about aging and menopause as a register of emerging discourses about menopause in post-WWII United States. Read through the lens of popular and medical articulations of and responses to the medicalization of female aging, Niedecker's poems demonstrate a critique of consumer-based power and the gendered tropes of American literary history.
