Abstract
The article presents the results of the study that revealed the interconnection of codependency, self-sacrifice, and altruism. It showed that though these personality traits are close in the meaning when actualized in helping behavior, codependence is typical for an immature personality, while self-sacrifice and altruism for an integral and self-sufficient one. It has been experimentally proved that self-sacrifice and altruism are interconnected; altruism is an effective implementation of helping behavior, and self-sacrifice is ideational attitude reflected in readiness for such behavior. Codependency is not connected with self-sacrifice and altruism phenomena, having a different motivation and associated with violence experienced in childhood. Differentiating these phenomena helps to correct inef-fective helping behavior, as well as to develop an ability to actualize its productive and socially important aspects.
