In order to obtain the views of specialists concerning their perceptions of the diagnostic and support process for children with ASD, semi-structured interviews were conducted in one local education authority. The participants reported several difficulties during the diagnostic process, long waiting lists for assessment, an increase in the prevalence of autism, lack of standardized diagnostic tools for ASD and difficulties in the development of links between professional agencies. All the participants stressed the importance of collaboration between parents and specialists in all stages of the assessment process as well as the importance of individual education planning for each child with ASD. The present study highlights the role of the KEDDY for the differential diagnosis and support of children with ASD and the need for continuous autism training to parents, teachers and professionals.
