NOAA/WDS Paleoclimatology - Mangini et al. 2005 Spannagel Cave Stalagmite Oxygen Isotope Data and Temperature Reconstruction
This archived Paleoclimatology Study is available from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), under the World Data Service (WDS) for Paleoclimatology. The associated NCEI study type is Cave. The data include parameters of speleothems with a geographic location of Austria, Western Europe. The time period coverage is from 2040 to 15 in calendar years before present (BP). See metadata information for parameter and study location details. Please cite this study when using the data.

ABSTRACT SUPPLIED BY ORIGINATOR: The precisely dated isotopic composition of a stalagmite from Spannagel Cave in the Central Alps is translated into a highly resolved record of temperature at high elevation during the past 2000 yr. Temperature maxima during the Medieval Warm Period between 800 and 1300 AD are in average about 1.7°C higher than the minima in the Little Ice Age and similar to present-day values. The high correlation of this record to d14C suggests that solar variability was a major driver of climate in Central Europe during the past 2 millennia.
|
Purpose | Records of past temperature, precipitation, and other aspects of climate derived from mineral deposits found in caves. Parameter keywords describe what was measured in this dataset. Additional summary information can be found in the abstracts of papers listed in the dataset citations. |
