This process comprises the steps of saturating wood chips with water by immersing in hot water (ca 100°C), draining the excess water from chips, passing steam through water-saturated chips so as to heat chips to a temperature of Ca. 180°C. and to remove furfural from chips, immersing the steamed chips in cold alkaline liquor so as to saturate with alkaline liquor, separating chips from the excess of alkaline liquor and passing steam through alkali-saturated residue so as to heat the same to a temperature 160°C to 175°C. for 10 to 15 minutes.
Ca 40 kg of beech wood chips (oven dried chips ca 30 kg) were cooked per one batch, and several hundreds experiments were tested successfully.
