Abstract

The SLAD (Stick Aided Loose Abrasives Dressing) method done by supplying loose abrasives into the contact area between CBN wheel and Alumina (WA) stick was previously developed for efficiently forming the uniform CBN wheel surface with high dense cutting edge distribution. In the report, the durable characteristics against grinding process of the high dense distribution and the sharp wheel edge formed by the SLAD method, which act important for forming the smooth surface and the sharp corner, respectively, are examined and discussed by comparison with the WASD method done by using only WA stick. The high dense cutting edge distribution formed by the SLAD is durable for conventional grinding conditions and lasts for long grinding process. The corner radius at wheel edge can be formed much smaller by the SLAD than the WASD.The wheel edge formed by the SLAD after long conventional grinding process is sharper than the WASD though the wheel edge becomes transiently and rapidly duller in the initial grinding stage for severer grinding condition. As a result, the finished surface roughness with the SLAD is better than the WASD.
