Many of us came to science out of curiosity, in search of understanding and beauty. Over time we discover that science is a tremendously powerful tool. The potential success and applicability of our scientific project confronts us with ethical questions that we cannot ignore. In a profoundly unequal society, who has access to the technologies that may result? Who benefits and who is harmed? What is our responsibility as scientists and engineers? What role do we play in building a more just and equitable society? This is the reflection of a researcher whose work in "pure" mathematics found unexpected applications.
