Abstract

Altered andesites are distributed in the Kinzan area, Satsuma-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture. Fractions less than 2μm of their constitutent minerals were studied, and a regularly interstratified mineral of chlorite and montmorillonite was found. The mineral was observed between chlorite zone and montmorillonite zone. The mineral has a 001 reflection at 30.5 Å which expanded to 32.7 Å by treatment with ethylene glycol. The 30.5 Å peak moved to 23.8 Å after heating to 800°C.
