Abstract

Benzylpenicillin, an antibiotic was oxidized by myeloperoxidase, hydrogen peroxide and chloride, and particularly in an acidic solution (pH 4.5 to 5.0). Until about 20 mM chloride, the rate of oxidation reaction increased in propotion to the concentration of chloride, although with a higher concentration, a rapid decrease was observed. And, one product was detected by using high pressure reverse phase partition chromatography. The product had a lower polarity, compared with benzylpenicillin.
