Abstract

New electro-optical switching element utilizing transient light scattering accompanied with domain switching of ferroelectric liquid crystal by the polarity reversal of applied electric field is prepared. The switching time is in μsec range and much shorter than those of conventional nematic device like TN or DSM cells. This new device is found to indicate excellent characteristics like high speed, high contrast, wide viewing angle.
