Pediatric Emergency Surgeries

This chapter will explore common pediatric emergency surgeries and

situations that many anesthesiologists may face in their careers. Although there are

specialized pediatric hospitals and pediatric anesthesiologists in practice, pediatric

emergencies arise at secondary and tertiary centers, where staff may not be familiar

with these situations. Sometimes there is time to triage patients to a higher level of

care, but in some emergencies, a pediatric anesthesiologist may not be available right

away, or there is not enough time to transfer the patient. This chapter will go over

special considerations that any anesthesiologist should be aware of when providing

care to patients in these situations.
