Influence of surrounding gas on the flash-pyrolitic behavior of Taiheiyo coal was investigated under N_2 and He atmosphere. It was found that the coal was decomposed more slowly under N_2 atmosphere. The lag of pyrolysis obserrved in N_2 atmosphere might be attributed to lower thermal conductivity of N_2 gas.
