Abstract:
Pepper or chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is mainly consumed for its fruit.
Besides that, many pepper cultivars have been used as ornamental plants such as pot, bedding, and garden plants.
However, the availability of commercial pepper cultivars declared as ornamental plants is still very limited in Indonesia.
The general aim of this program was to develop new cultivars of ornamental pepper.
The program was initially started in 2013. Crossings between selected genotypes/collections from IPB University (Bogor Agricultural University) have been made.
The pedigree method was used to obtain good candidates based on the uniqueness of fruits and leaf color, shape, and size and the whole plant shape, and compactness.
In addition, consumer preference tests have also been performed.
Nine new cultivars have been produced from this program, with three cultivars that have been released namely ‘Ayesha IPB’, ‘Lembayung IPB’, and ‘Syakira IPB’. Six cultivars namely ‘Namira IPB’, ‘Jelita IPB’, ‘Triwarsana IPB’, ‘Nazla IPB’, ‘Viola IPB’, and ‘Violeta IPB’ have been registered.
These new cultivars can be used for ornamental chili production.
In addition, information on ornamental chili cultivars can be used as the basis for further research in chili plant breeding programs, especially as ornamental plants.
